People come and go in our lives, but there are a few who stay and become permanent fixtures. However, many things can start to threaten valuable friendships - shifting priorities, diverging career trajectories or even living in different countries can make communication hard to maintain. Here are a few tips to help you keep those important ones close.1. Use technology
Social media, WhatsApp, Skype, FaceTime - the list goes on and on. There are so many ways for us to stay connected, when meeting face to face is not possible. Make an effort to drop a text, or share a funny meme on Facebook, just to let your friend know that you're thinking about her.2. Make time
This would require more effort, but is essential to maintaining a friendship. Agree to set aside a few hours for a Skype chat, or even better, plan for an activity together, such as a shopping date, pizza party or maybe just a simple night in - after all, the company is all that matters.3. Be available
Something that is a trademark of a good friend is to be available whenever one needs them the most. So, be there when your friend needs you to - listen to their problems, give advice, or simply be an outlet or a shoulder to lean on.
Let your friends know that they are on your mind by keeping them updated about all the going-ons in your life, and asking how they are doing as well. If your friend likes music, share with them the new band you've gotten into, or if she is a bookworm, send her a book you think she'll like as a surprise.5. Let go
Lastly, don't be afraid to let go if a friendship has run its course. Make space for new friends who share the same interests and values, and hold on to the old ones that are still there.
