8 Ways You Can Use Coconut Oil

By Alexandria Battaglia

Coconut oil is a fantastic, multipurpose product. There has been a lot of discussion on whether it can be used as a cheap alternative to expensive beauty products and I am here to tell you the answer is yes! I have been a coconut oil fanatic since I first used it 2 years ago. I will put it anywhere and everywhere, and let me tell you, it truly is a miracle worker. Here are a few ways you can incorporate coconut oil into your skincare routine.

The most obvious. You can use it on your face and body as an alternative to a cream, and all you have to do it use it straight from the jar! It has so many benefits; the most prominent being intense hydration for your skin, it also helps to decrease wrinkles and sun spots, minimises scars and stretch marks, assists in eliminating cellulite and there are skin tone benefits as well.

Body Scrub
There are so many creative ways you can make a DIY body scrub with coconut oil. My two favourites are to mix in either raw sugar or coffee grinds. Both have great advantages and you're getting a deep exfoliation in the process.

Hair Treatment
Again using it straight from the jar, I like to section my hair focusing on the roots and then bringing the oil down onto the ends. Wrap your hair in a towel or cling wrap and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Coconut oil helps to strengthen your hair and also gives you a soft, shiny finish once washed out. It has also been found to stimulate hair growth when massaged into the scalp. Winner winner!

Lip Conditioner
Chuck a little bit of the oil on your lips before bed. You'll wake up with smooth, soft lips!

Face Mask
Mix coconut oil, rosehip oil, olive oil and some raw sugar. I like to ensure the consistency isn't too runny as it will drip off your face, the point is to let it soak in for 15 minutes or so. Once you've left it on your face for a while, massage it into the skin before rinsing off so give an exfoliating effect.

Teeth Whitener
Mix together some coconut oil, baking soda and activated charcoal. Brush your teeth with the mixture as you normally would, focusing on the areas that need some whitening (generally the front teeth). Once you have brushed for a few minutes, rinse your mouth and brush with normal toothpaste to get rid of the charcoal colour.

Cuticle Oil
Simply massage some coconut oil into your cuticles. This will help soften them and deter any further splitting.

When I do my make-up, I leave highlighter until the last step because I always want it to look fresh and prominent on my face. If you want to ramp up the shine, dab some coconut oil on a cotton ball (as minimal as possible, you don't want it to get messy!) and press lightly over the areas you want that highlighter to shine! I generally do this after I have put my highlighter on but it works just as well doing it prior.
