Style Spotlight: Take Aim

For this week's Style Spotlight, we ventured through the Meatpacking District and West Village with Michelle Madsen of modern, LA-based blog, Take Aim. Michelle fills us in on her blogging journey, her minimalist-casual aesthetic, and even some of her must-have beauty essentials.

What’s your blogging story? How did you start and what has your journey been?

About three years ago I found myself following a lot of different blogs - fashion, food, and travel. I loved reading posts and after a couple of months I became interested in creating a site where I could be creative and express myself. The first couple of years were more of a hobby, but I recently started blogging full time this March.

How did the name, Take Aim, come about?

When I started blogging I was a little reluctant and nervous to do so. I called my blog TAKE AIM because I really believe in finding something you enjoy and setting your mind to pursue it. I also wanted my blog to be a place that inspires people to take aim at their dreams as well.

What sparked your interest in fashion?

My husband started a clothing line shortly after I met him and once we got married I starting doing it with him. Over the course of four years I was able to go to trade shows, meet buyers and learn a lot about the industry. I quickly fell in love.

How would you describe your aesthetic? Who are some of your biggest influences/where do you find inspiration?

I keep my style fairly minimal and casual, but I also like to have fun statement shoes or accessories. I find most of my inspiration from lookbooks of favorite brands, style Instagram accounts, blogs and sites like WhoWhatWear.

What are some fashion pieces you couldn’t live without?

I couldn’t go without hats, sneakers and leather watches.

What are your five go-to beauty essentials?

R Co dry shampoo, Bobbi Brown under-eye concealer, Trish McEvoy warm-water removal mascara (no dark circles!), Aesop toner and Nars lip pencils.

Your content is awesome, how do you shoot and edit your pictures?

Well, thank you! I work with a couple LA photographers and other blogger friends that get my aesthetic. I try to shoot in good lighting with minimal but cool backgrounds. For my Instagram I used apps like VSCO and Snapseed to edit my photos.

Any advice for aspiring bloggers?

Collaborate! The best way to get exposure is to partner with like-minded companies where the relationship is beneficial to both. Be true to your taste and only post content that you’re proud of.

What’s one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?

Most people know that I live in downtown LA but it might surprise you that my home is the second floor of a warehouse building in the middle of Skid Row. My husband built it into a beautiful space where we can live, work and help those around us in need.

Any exciting projects in the works?

I’m heading to NYFW next week and have some fun projects I’ll be sharing about. Beyond that, I’ll be going on a new trip almost every week over the next couple of months and sharing about my recently finished office space.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I spend some good time with friends and family in the LA and Orange County area. I also like to read and go to yoga in my spare time.

What are some of your favorite places in LA?

Downtown is definitely my favorite place right now - too many good coffee shops and restaurants to name. Another great spots would be Venice for shopping, lunch and beach time.

Last question, any songs or albums on repeat right now?

Lately, I’ve been mostly listening to Sylvan Esso, The Weeknd, Sia, John Legend, Alt J and Lykke Li.
